Calprotectin is a protein found in white blood cells, particularly in neutrophils, which are a type of immune cell. It plays a crucial role in the body's defence against infection and inflammation. Calprotectin levels increase in response to inflammation, making it a valuable biomarker for assessing inflammatory conditions, particularly those affecting the gastrointestinal tract.

Calprotectin testing is commonly used to diagnose and monitor inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Elevated levels of calprotectin in stool samples indicate inflammation in the intestines, helping healthcare providers differentiate between inflammatory conditions and non-inflammatory conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The importance of calprotectin lies in its ability to provide non-invasive and cost-effective insight into intestinal inflammation. By measuring calprotectin levels, healthcare providers can make more informed decisions regarding treatment strategies, monitor disease activity, and assess response to therapy in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases and other gastrointestinal conditions characterised by inflammation.

Calprotectin is a protein expressed mainly by myeloid cells. It recruits monocytes to the site of inflammation and is thus believed to be a mediator of chronic inflammation. Faecal calprotectin is a reliable differentiating marker for IBD and IBS in a non-invasive stool test. Monitoring levels of faecal calprotectin can also help determine the efficacy of clinical interventions in IBD management.

Calprotectin can be ordered as a standalone profile, but it is also included in the GI EcologiX gastrointestinal health and microbiome profile for a comprehensive analysis of gut and digestive health.
