What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the most ancient forms of medicines known to man and has been around for thousands of years. Even today, it is still used as the medicine of choice in many Eastern countries. The oldest text books were written over two thousand years ago and are still being written today as new research is carried out, and new techniques are discovered. The fact that this incredible form of medicine is still around today after thousands of years of use and scrutiny shows just how effective its results are. Acupuncture was first discovered when it was found that stimulating different points on the body gave positive affects to certain symptoms and illnesses; from there a system of medicine and treating people developed, with the basis that stimulating these points encouraged the body to help heal itself using its own energy.

The word acupuncture actually comes from the Latin meaning 'acus' (needle) and 'punctura' (to puncture). Acupuncture uses small fine needles to stimulate certain points in the body which can either encourage energy to flow more smoothly, or it can be used to help remove a block in the energy.
